Bosherston lily ponds

Well known for its pike fishing, Bosherston lily ponds are 74 acres of spring fed lakes near the Pembrokeshire coast on the Stackpole estate.

Bosherston has fishing for pike, perch, tench and silver fish. The lakes are gin clear and very weedy, allowing you to spot fish. Best time for pike is in winter, in summer there can be great fishing for roach and tench.

The fishing is controlled by the National Trust. Day tickets £10, £5 under 16, Adult Season £50, Junior season £30. Day tickets are paid to ranger on the bank.

There is a strict close season from 15th March -15th June (inclusive).

Rules: There are 50 pegs. Fishing from numbered pegs only. No live bait, No night-time fishing. Rod licence required. Wheelchair-accessible fishing points on eastern end and western arm of lake, however many of the pegs require a long walk from the parking area.

Whats been Caught: perch 3lb, tench 4-9lb, pike 10-32lb, eels 5lb.

Tactics to try? Float fish laying on over depth, maggots, sweet corn, pellets, worms or bread over groundbait for the tench, and keep two swims going, as pike often move in on feeding shoals. Most pike are caught on float fished deadbaits and popper lures.

Why you must fish it? Three flooded limestone valleys covering 70 acres, dammed at the end of the 19th century for the landowning Earls of Cawdor and their families to enjoy. Visitors flock to see the  lakes lilies which are at their best in June, and to visit the nearby beaches and nature reserve. Some pegs are wheelchair accessible, and summer tench fishing and pike fishing in winter is a big angling attraction with a huge head of both in the ponds. Expect tench to 5 lb  average and fish known to 9lb.  a dozen or more pike to high doubles in a session, and there are also good roach. and perch to 3lb.
