Fishing in Wales in October

October in Wales beckons anglers with a diverse array of fishing opportunities. As autumnal hues paint the stunning countryside, Welsh waters come alive with activity, making it an ideal time for fishing enthusiasts to cast their lines.

Grayling Fishing on Rivers:

October is a great time for grayling fishing in Welsh rivers. The cooling temperatures trigger grayling to become more active. Popular rivers for grayling fishing in Wales include the Wye, Irfon, Severn, Dee, and Taff. Fly fishing and trotting with bait are effective techniques for targeting grayling.

Pike Fishing:

Pike fishing can be excellent in October as these predatory fish become more active before the winter months. There are plentiful Welsh venues offering opportunities for pike fishing. Popular venues include Llyn Trawsfynydd, Llyn Brenig, Llangorse lake and the River Wye.

Rainbow Trout Fishing on Lakes:

October is an excellent month for trout fishing on Welsh lakes and fisheries. The waters are usually clear and cold, with the fish actively feeding. Brenig, Llyn Clywedog, and Trawsfynydd Reservoir are renowned for their rainbow trout fishing. Fly fishing is the preferred method, but spinners and bait fishing can also yield results on the multi method venues such as Usk reservoir, Alwen reservoir and Llwyn-onn. Natural Brown Trout Stillwaters and Migratory Salmonids:

Brown trout rivers are now closed, but for stillwater wild trout enthusiasts, most of the natural lakes are open untill 17^th October; venues such as Elan Valley, Talybont reservoir, Aberystwyth lakes and the numerous North Wales lakes can be superb. Likewise, 17th October sees the close of the majority of game fish rivers in Wales for sea trout and salmon. The final weeks can be exceptional; but please ensure the safe return of all fish as spawning approaches.

Fishing for Barbel, Carp and Perch:

Coarse fishing enthusiasts can target barbel, perch and carp in October. Carp are often very active when mild weather persists, as are barbel on the Wye, Severn and lower Taff. Lakes and canals across Wales, such as the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal, have specimen perch. Other venues such as White Springs, Port Talbot Dock and Riverside at Caerphilly can all produce sizable perch at this time of year.

Bass Fishing:

Along the Welsh coast, bass fishing remains productive in October. Key locations include Pembrokeshire, Anglesey, and the Gower Peninsula. Use soft plastics, crankbaits, and live bait to catch bass around rocky outcrops and estuaries.

Cod Fishing:

As the waters cool in October, cod fishing begins to pick up along the Welsh coast, particularly in the Bristol Channel and Cardigan Bay. Charter boats from ports like Cardiff and Swansea offer opportunities for off-shore cod fishing.
