Spur-dog - Fishing in Wales

Spur-dog

Spur-dog

Squalus acanthias

Another member of the shark family, the spur-dog is a fairly large fish that can go well over 20lb. It is a hard fighting fish, with a high average weight.

Double figure spur-dog are regularly caught off the Welsh coast. Spur dogs have bony spines in the fins, if not careful these can inflict injury. The spines are also mildly venomous, but will only cause mild swelling and discomfort.

Spur dog are more often found in deep water, so a charter boat is a good way to fish for them. They can move into relatively shallow water to feed, so they can sometimes appear in Welsh shore anglers catches as a welcome bonus.

Spurdog will spend most of their time near the seabed eating bottom dwelling fish such as small flatfish and codling, although they will feed in midwater on baitfish, especially in summertime. Spur-dog move around in big shoals, when you hit into one expect fast and furious action. Fish baits such as mackerel and sandeel work best, also squid.
