National Fishing Month In Wales: Pick up a rod!

As National Fishing Month gets underway across the UK, people and communities throughout Wales are being encouraged to discover the many benefits of angling, from improving wellbeing and connecting with nature, to supporting local tourism and rural economies.

Wales is uniquely placed to celebrate the occasion. With its abundance of rivers, lakes, fisheries and coastline, the country offers some of the finest mixed fishing opportunities in Britain.

What’s more, going fishing in Wales is genuinely affordable with freshwater day tickets available from as little as £4 and annual angling club memberships from £30. Sea fishing is completely free from public areas.

In Wales and elsewhere angling is increasingly being recognised for its positive effects on mental health and wellbeing. Spending time outdoors, away from the pressures of daily life, can help reduce stress and encourage mindfulness.

Going fishing also offers opportunities for social connection, bringing together people from different backgrounds through a shared interest.

National Fishing Month places particular emphasis on encouraging newcomers to give fishing a try.

Across Wales, freshwater angling clubs and fisheries are always keen to welcome beginners and often hold events, such as fishing or casting lessons, throughout the summer.  

For young people, fishing can offer valuable lessons in patience, responsibility and respect for nature. Schools, youth groups and community organisations are increasingly recognising angling as a way to engage children and teenagers in outdoor activities.

Take a Friend Fishing Is Back!

The popular “Take a Friend Fishing” initiative is back on for the whole of NFM; this is a scheme that helps make angling more accessible to newcomers. TAFF allows licensed anglers to introduce friends, family members or colleagues to the sport by obtaining a free temporary freshwater fishing licence for them.

National Fishing Month provides an ideal opportunity for people in Wales to explore what is available on their doorstep. Whether it is a first experience on a local coarse fishery, a family day by a trout reservoir or a seasoned angler returning to a favourite stretch of coastline, the campaign celebrates a pastime that remains deeply connected to Welsh culture and the countryside.
