Rainbow trout
Oncorhynchus mykiss
Rainbow trout are widely stocked into small stillwater fisheries and reservoirs throughout Wales. Rainbow trout do not breed in Wales and stocked fish are triploids.
Rainbow trout grow quickly in Welsh lakes, where they thrive in the cold water, providing great trout fishing. Fly fishing is the favourite method for them, although some waters are any method.
Rainbows provide fantastic fishing on our larger reservoirs, with fish often of a high average size – 45cm plus. There are several stocked variations of rainbow trout – including blue trout and golden trout.
