The River Wheeler is a small tributary of the Clwyd that has an established population of brown trout and has runs of sea trout and salmon when the water heights are right. Vale of Clwyd Angling Club has the fishing rights. Head to their website for more information. The wheeler can be split into 2 sections. Section 1 (lower) A couple of fields above the bridge and down the cottages are well worth an hour or so’s fishing. This section of our beat on the wheeler fishes earlier on in the season before the ranunculus starts to build up and has plenty of deep bends and back eddies that hold some decent trout. Section 2. The upper section of the beat is very wooded and has more of a mountain stream feel about it. Again there’s good selection of deepish pools and fast runs to explore. With lightening fast brownies nipping at your fly. Section 1. Fly wise this is the best of the two. I fish a weighted nymph or dry. Section 2. The upper section is very difficult to use a fly rod, being well wooded. It’s a fun river to explore and disappear from the rat race of modern life and you can guarantee you’ll not meet anyone else as very few venture out to fish it and crystal clear as the water gets filtered by the sand.
