An old phurnacite site, Abercwmboi Lake (aka the phurnie) was once a polluted dumping ground. Nature has returned to the lake, which is now clean and rich in aquatic life. The lake holds carp to a good size, pike and rudd. There may be other coarse fish present. It is very shallow and very weedy in summer. The fishing is said locally to be ‘free’ for rod licence holders – it is unknown who, if anyone, owns the angling rights.
