Alosa alosa and Alosa fallax

A saltwater fish that migrates to freshwater to breed, shad can be found in major Welsh rivers such as the Wye, Towy and Usk in late May and early June.

Shad are a relative of the herring and look like a mini tarpon. They will take lures and flies intended for trout and salmon. Shad are a protected species, so it is illegal to intentionally fish for them.
