Flounder
Platichthys flesus
Probably the most common species of flatfish in Wales, it lives in shallow water often near to an influx of fresh water.
Flatties favour clear sandy or muddy ground and can travel up rivers into freshwater. Due to their wide distribution and willingness to take most baits they are a common catch for many Welsh anglers. Indeed, flounder provide many young anglers with their first sea fish catch.
All flatfish tend to be found on sandy beaches, over light ground and in estuaries, of which we have an abundance in Wales.
