Mackerel - Fishing in Wales

Mackerel

Mackerel

Scomber scombrus

A common fish off Welsh coasts, mackerel spend the warmer months close to shore and near the surface, appearing in late spring and departing with the arrival of colder weather in autumn. During the autumn and winter, it migrates out into deeper and more southern water, seeking warmer temperatures.

Mackerel are a favourite summer fish in Wales and can be caught from piers, harbours and breakwaters, also from charter boats in tourist towns such as Tenby. Mackerel are great eating fish, especially when grilled or cooked on the BBQ. They can be easily caught on mackerel feathers or lures, making them an ideal fish for beginners.
