Talybont Reservoir

A 320 acre Welsh Water fly fishing reservoir co-leased by Merthyr Tydfil Angling Alliance and Gwent Angling Society, Tal-y-Bont is a true wild brown trout venue, and since 2017 day tickets have been purely catch and release.

Day tickets can be booked online, with the Fishing Passport. Full members of MTAA and Gwent AS angling clubs can fish the water on a season ticket basis.

There is a decent head of wild trout in the water, perhaps averaging 13 inches in length. There are also many better fish in the 15 to 18 inch range. It fished best on a dull, damp or windy day in the summer. Evenings also fish well, with good hatches of buzzer and sedge.

It is possible to wade the reservoir, but extreme caution must be taken due to drop offs and submerged channels.

The water is regularly patrolled by Welsh Water rangers and volunteer bailiff’s from the local angling clubs.
