Whiting

Merlangius merlangius

A small member of the cod family, whiting are a commonly caught fish in the winter months off Welsh shores. In fact, they can be so numerous that they are sometimes considered a bit of a pest.

Whiting rarely go over 1lb in weight, so don’t expect much of a fight. However, whiting are good to eat, and being easy to catch are an ideal fish for beginners or children to catch.

Whiting can be found all over Wales, but Bristol channel is a known area where they are extremely abundant. They can be caught quite close to shore, so no need for hero distance casts. They take almost any baits, with worm and mackerel strip probably the most effective.
